About the role

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of front-line payroll and benefit services across multiple University portfolios within a shared services model.
  • Oversee client relationships to ensure payroll delivery is proactive, collaborative, and integrated with divisional HR needs.
  • Audit, investigate, and resolve complex escalated issues related to payroll and benefits.
  • Implement the overarching shared services strategy for payroll and benefits administration, ensuring consistent policy application.
  • Manage business process improvement projects to identify efficiencies and enhance the client experience.
  • Lead a team of payroll and benefits professionals, fostering a high-performance, client-focused culture.
  • Represent shared service divisions on tri-campus committees and institutional special projects.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in payroll, human resources, finance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a CPM certificate or current enrollment in Canadian Payroll Association courses leading toward the CPM certificate.
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience overseeing a shared service payroll function.
  • Experience working within a large public-sector, unionized environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and motivating staff.
  • Expert experience working with HRIS/FIS systems, preferably in an SAP/SAP HCM environment.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and business process reengineering skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply employment legislation, collective agreement provisions, and Canadian taxation laws.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience overseeing payroll within an academic environment.
  • Benefits designation.
  • Project Management certification.
