About the role
Responsibilities
- Manage the University's regulatory compliance programs, including biosafety, biosecurity, and radiation safety.
- Serve as the primary Biological Safety Officer for institutional licenses under the Human Pathogens and Toxins Act (HPTA).
- Oversee activities related to institutional biosafety, biosecurity, and radiation safety programs.
- Provide advice on safe handling of hazardous agents, containment requirements, and biosafety permits.
- Conduct routine site visits, audits, and assessments of laboratories handling hazardous agents and invasive species.
- Develop and implement emergency response and alternative operational plans for work stoppage or labor strike scenarios.
- Manage work assignments for staff and oversee compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal regulatory obligations.
- Represent the University in communications with regulatory agencies such as PHAC, CFIA, and CNSC.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in microbiology or a related discipline (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- 5 years of experience leading biosafety and bio-risk management programs in a large academic setting.
- Experience with regulatory oversight of high-containment environments.
- Experience in emergency response and planning.
- Proven staff management experience.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Strong ability to communicate complex technical issues to diverse stakeholders, including senior administrators and union leaders.
