About the role
Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and develop model makers, including planning work assignments, training, and performance evaluations.
- Act as a catalyst for new prototyping technologies, including digital fabrication, AI, and advanced visualization tools.
- Optimize shop workflows, equipment usage, and prototype throughput using digital tools and data.
- Supervise all model shop activities, ensuring timely, accurate, and high-quality delivery to internal customers.
- Provide technical support to model makers and designers to achieve high-definition appearance models and precision rapid prototypes.
- Manage the Model Shop budget, including material spend, machine leasing, and inventory.
- Ensure compliance with company safety and environmental policies and maintain shop equipment and facilities.
- Coordinate resources, including ordering supplies, managing work order databases, and qualifying external suppliers.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED (Associate’s degree, Journeyman’s status, or Tool & Die certificate highly preferred).
- 5+ years of professional model making experience.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of machining practices and material fabrication techniques.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to coach and inspire a team.
- Proficiency in MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and CAD packages (Solidworks, Creo, or Rhino).
- Experience with Rapid Prototyping processes, machines, and software.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Industrial Design degree or equivalent.
- Experience with emerging prototyping, additive manufacturing, or AI-driven digital fabrication tools.
- Extensive knowledge of working with various materials such as metal tubing, plastics, and urethanes.
- Expertise in finishing, assembly, priming, and painting processes.
