Maintenance Mechanic I

Responsibilities

• Inspect equipment including motors, fans, pumps, thermostats, and plumbing, heating, or electrical systems to determine maintenance needs
• Perform repairs and maintenance on cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, buffing machines, and auto scrubbers
• Replace or adjust hardware including door knobs, hinges, toilet seats, and light fixtures
• Maintain plumbing systems by repairing ball cock assemblies, faucets, and clearing drains
• Perform minor carpentry and furniture repair, including repairing ceiling/floor tiles and re-gluing furniture
• Execute seasonal tasks such as snow removal from walks, drives, and parking lots
• Prepare inspection reports and work orders for necessary repairs
• Operate university vehicles and move heavy objects or large Dewar flasks as required

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience in maintenance field work
• Practical experience in at least one of the following: electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or carpentry
• Proficiency with the use of hand tools
• Ability to routinely move and position heavy objects
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet requirements to operate a University of Michigan vehicle
• Good record-keeping and customer service skills
• Familiarity with computer application software
