About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality clinical care to paediatric patients with ophthalmic conditions
- Diagnose and manage conditions such as strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, and nasolacrimal duct obstruction
- Perform specialist paediatric ophthalmic surgery where appropriate
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings with orthoptists, optometrists, and paediatricians
- Support emergency and urgent care as required
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation in line with governance standards
- Provide supervision and training to junior doctors, orthoptic staff, and trainees
- Engage in audit, clinical governance, and quality improvement projects
Requirements
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Ophthalmology (or eligible within 6 months)
- Extensive experience in Paediatric Ophthalmology at Consultant or equivalent level
- Fellowship training or substantial experience in paediatric ophthalmology
- Up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and child protection protocols
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
- FRCOphth or equivalent specialist qualification
- Experience working in the NHS or similar healthcare systems
- Experience in teaching or research in paediatric ophthalmology
- Previous locum or consultant-level roles in tertiary or secondary care settings
