About the role
Responsibilities
- Engage and disengage track switches to switch cars for loading and unloading
- Manually knuckle and un-knuckle rail cars
- Communicate with locomotive operators via hand signals and two-way radio
- Perform daily preventative maintenance on locomotive, crane, and mobile equipment
- Inspect scrap loads and identify nonferrous material
- Operate scale systems via computer and maintain weigh ticket files
- Assist in re-railing derailed rail cars and performing maintenance during downtime
- Operate hand torches to cut scrap and participate in daily housekeeping
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to work in a steel mill environment with dust and extreme weather
- Physical ability to climb ladders, squat, bend, crawl, and kneel
- Ability to operate hand controls and foot pedals
- Ability to swing a 10 lb. sledgehammer repetitively
- Normal depth perception and ability to distinguish color
Preferred Qualifications
- 1-3 years of experience as a crane or heavy equipment operator
