Linux Engineer

Responsibilities

• Maintain and improve the platform powering Jane Street's production trading systems
• Debug kernel performance, develop management tools, and resolve production issues in real time
• Drive deployment automation, scalable configuration management, and comprehensive monitoring
• Collaborate with trading, technology, and operations teams on firm-wide systems
• Perform root-cause analyses and integrate robust long-term fixes

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
• Experience managing and troubleshooting Linux systems
• Exposure to Linux environments through software development or IT operations
• Interest in systems programming and administration
• Willingness to learn OCaml (no prior experience required)
• Proficiency with the Unix command line and basic shell scripting
• Basic understanding of network protocols and troubleshooting ability
• Comfort with fundamental programming concepts
• Strong programming skills in any language

Preferred Qualifications

• Practical experience with modern Linux systems and systems programming concepts (e.g., C, sockets, virtual memory, process life cycle)
• Intermediate or advanced knowledge of troubleshooting tools (e.g., gdb, perf, DTrace, eBPF, SystemTap)
• Interest in learning modern computer architecture techniques (e.g., PCIe, NVMe, NUMA)
