Legal Counsel

Responsibilities

• Support all stages of development for open AI artifacts and technologies, including data curation, model training, and release planning
• Provide direct AI counseling for applications, research demos, and scientific agents
• Review and prepare data licenses, open source licenses, and related documentation
• Create and improve frameworks for responsible AI development and processes
• Create AI development guides, playbooks, and templates for releasing AI resources
• Provide strategic legal guidance balancing business priorities, nonprofit mission, and evolving AI regulations
• Support due diligence across charitable, scientific, and educational activities
• Collaborate and coach others across the organization

Requirements

• JD degree
• Licensed to practice law in Washington State
• 6+ years of technology transactions experience
• Experience with copyright and IP licensing
• Experience with data governance and privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, EU AI Act)
• Sufficient technical experience to communicate with research and engineering experts
• Ability to work in ambiguous and fast-moving environments

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in AI or product counseling
• Experience or interest in project management to improve legal workflows
