Lead Machine Learning Scientist

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and training of embedding models for representation learning, such as transformer encoders and Two Tower architectures
• Lead the fine-tuning and evaluation of language models for custom use cases and content enrichment
• Productionalize embedding and language models in close collaboration with engineering teams to integrate AI into user-facing products
• Define shared practices around evaluation and responsible A.I. use
• Identify novel project opportunities and scope ongoing product improvements
• Build and facilitate relationships across the organization to ensure project goals are met
• Support the mission of journalistic independence and seeking the truth

Requirements

• PhD plus 4+ years of experience, or 7+ years of experience, in machine learning, statistics, computer science, or a related quantitative discipline
• 4+ years of experience reframing complex challenges as Machine Learning tasks
• 4+ years of experience in data cleaning, preparation, feature engineering, and model selection
• 2+ years of experience coding and deploying complex algorithms in production environments using Python
• 2+ years of experience building production systems using LLMs, vision-language models, or embeddings
• 1+ years of experience mentoring junior ML scientists through pairing and code reviews

Preferred Qualifications

• 1+ years of experience with information retrieval or search systems
• 2+ years of experience collaborating cross-functionally with product managers and software engineers
• 2+ years of experience scoping and staging work into well-defined milestones
