About the role
Responsibilities
- Support and oversee day-to-day tasks of assigned horticulture team members
- Prune, weed, and install plants in landscaped areas
- Monitor and repair irrigation systems, including heads and lines
- Hand water unestablished plantings and oversee over seeding
- Apply herbicides as needed
- Maintain and clean all necessary equipment and tools
- Operate heavy equipment and skid steers to assist with tasks like turning compost
- Design and learn to design annual beds
- Mentor new staff and relay work requests or park issues to the Horticulture Manager
- Assist other departments and keepers with exhibit maintenance when required
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to work with little or no supervision
- Ability to operate small, medium, and heavy equipment safely
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs and working in all weather conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for 8–10 hour shifts
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in landscaping or grounds maintenance
