About the role

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the activities of Senior Machinists and Apprentice Machinists to ensure high-quality project completion.
  • Determine technical requirements for fabrication projects and provide customer quotes and delivery timelines.
  • Design, modify, and fabricate custom laboratory apparatus, tools, and jigs.
  • Create and review technical drawing sets for manufacturing.
  • Implement process improvements for workshop activities and coordinate equipment maintenance.
  • Analyze and recommend suitable materials and methods for fabrication and lab work.
  • Serve as a technical expert and resource for professionals within the department.

Requirements

  • College Diploma (2 years) or an equivalent combination of experience.
  • Minimum of eight years of recent and related experience, including apprenticeship.
  • Valid License as a General Machinist, Tool and Die Maker, or Mould Maker.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience using MasterCAM and SolidWorks software.
  • Proven experience in the programming and operation of CNC machines and CAD/CAM systems.
  • Advanced skills with milling machines, lathes, saws, drills, grinders, and welding equipment.
  • Ability to design delicate scientific apparatus from verbal instructions and rough sketches.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate staff within a unionized environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating Waterjet cutting machines, Press Brakes, Electro Discharge Machines, or Laser Cutters.
  • Proficiency in Tig, Mig, or Stick welding, particularly with stainless steel, tool steel, and aluminum.
  • Experience with High Temperature Brazing using stainless steel, copper, or brass.
