About the role
Responsibilities
- Act as an internal consultant and subject matter expert regarding health plan compliance and benefit programs
- Manage external compliance suppliers, including coordinating schedules, reviews, and leadership presentations
- Draft essential plan documentation such as summary plan descriptions, plan amendments, and summaries of material modifications
- Review and analyze benefit appeals, preparing draft responses and presenting findings to management
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes to develop strategic recommendations for benefit plans
- Support union negotiations by presenting proposed benefit packages and analyzing contract proposals
- Review benefit data and information feeds to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in the employee benefits legal or compliance field
- 5+ years of experience with FMLA, ACA, ERISA, COBRA, and Federal and State labor laws
- 5+ years of experience managing multiple complex projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and multitasking skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree, specifically with experience as an ERISA attorney
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
- Professional certification such as CEBS, PHR, or CPA
