Lead Backend Software Engineer

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership to the Product API team, including system architecture and design tradeoffs
• Mentor and coach engineers and new hires
• Collaborate with product and client engineering teams to design and deliver GraphQL APIs
• Own and evolve critical product subsystems like recommendations, catalog, search, and user preferences
• Build and maintain proxy and augmentation layers to integrate domain services
• Drive improvements to reliability, performance, and scalability of API infrastructure
• Collaborate with data science teams to instrument the API for experimentation and A/B testing
• Enhance observability tools to monitor performance and debug issues
• Work with infrastructure teams to optimize database queries and caching strategies

Requirements

• 8+ years of software development experience
• 2+ years of experience mentoring and providing technical guidance to engineers
• Strong experience designing and implementing GraphQL APIs at scale
• Proven track record building backend services using NodeJS, Ruby, Golang, Python, or similar
• Experience with cloud computing and deployment technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS
• Deep understanding of API design, RESTful/GraphQL patterns, and caching
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases and SQL
• Ability to design cohesive API abstractions and proxy/aggregation layers
• Familiarity with experimentation frameworks and A/B testing infrastructure
• Expertise in product-facing API development or machine learning systems
