About the role
Responsibilities
- Oversee laboratory operations including wet chemistry, microbiology, and Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) testing.
- Lead analytical activities to support wastewater treatment plant performance and NPDES permit compliance.
- Ensure all analytical work adheres to EPA-approved methods, Standard Methods, and California ELAP accreditation requirements.
- Supervise, train, and mentor professional and technical laboratory staff.
- Manage section-specific QA/QC programs and maintain audit readiness for regulatory inspections.
- Lead investigations related to quality events or compliance exceedances.
- Collaborate with advanced instrumental analysis sections (ICP, GC, HPLC) to ensure cross-functional coordination.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or a closely related field.
- Four years of increasingly responsible chemical laboratory experience, typically in a water or wastewater utility laboratory.
- Valid Class C California Driver's License and ability to maintain insurability.
- Proven ability to perform and interpret complex chemical and instrumental analyses.
- Strong knowledge of QA/QC programs and federal, state, and local regulatory standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of supervisory responsibility.
- Valid Grade IV Laboratory Analyst/Water Quality Analyst certificate from the California Water Environment Association or the California-Nevada section of the American Water Works Association.
- Working knowledge of complex instrumentation such as ICP-MS, GC-MS, and HPLC.
