Lab Automation Intern

About the Company

Adaptyv is building an automated lab that lets AI agents run biology experiments. We are building the infrastructure that gives AI agents access to the physical world, bridging the gap between AI-designed hypotheses and physical experimental results.

Responsibilities

• Help build and run automated liquid-handling protocols on robots (Hamilton STAR and others) using Python and open-source tooling
• Support work-cell operation and maintenance, including loading runs, swapping consumables, and calibrating instruments
• Write Python software for instrument drivers, integrations, and tooling to control hardware
• Assist in reverse-engineering instrument communication using tools like Wireshark or serial sniffers
• Run tests on new protocols and instruments, record results, and flag anomalies
• Document protocols, work-cell layouts, and technical fixes
• Assist with physical tasks such as wiring devices and prepping reagents

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's in engineering, robotics, mechatronics, computer science, bioengineering, or a related field
• Generalist maker mindset with interest in software, electronics, and mechanics
• Solid Python programming skills, including experience with APIs, Git, and debugging
• Proficiency using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code) to accelerate software development
• Highly organized and reliable with strong documentation habits

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with 3D printing, CAD, electronics, soldering, or microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi)
• Experience with robotics or lab automation
• Contributions to open-source projects like PyLabRobot, PyHamilton, or Opentrons
