Initiative Director, Redefining Public Safety

About the Company

The Redefining Public Safety (RPS) Initiative at the Vera Institute of Justice helps jurisdictions to adopt comprehensive approaches to public safety by championing solutions that prevent crime and break its cycle. The team provides technical assistance, produces data for policy change, and engages in advocacy and narrative change.

Responsibilities

• Lead the RPS initiative by refining and executing strategy and a holistic vision
• Manage and operationalize workstreams including legislative advocacy, technical assistance, and research
• Develop and manage external relationships with policymakers, mayors, and community leaders
• Represent Vera as an expert in media outlets, conferences, and webinars
• Oversee staff development, goal setting, and accountability
• Manage team operations including budgets, deadlines, and staff deployment
• Partner with development departments to accomplish fundraising goals

Requirements

• Advanced degree and 12+ years of relevant experience (or equivalent work/life experience)
• Minimum 10 years of leadership experience in public safety
• Experience working with governments to advance community safety
• Proven track record of leading or building coalitions with community organizations
• Experience in strategic planning, program design, and budget management
• Demonstrated ability in media appearances and public speaking

Preferred Qualifications

• Track record of translating quantitative and qualitative research to drive policy change
• Advanced degree in a relevant field
