Infrastructure Engineer, Distributed Compute

Responsibilities

• Design and build the core orchestration and coordination layer for device fleet operations
• Build backend systems for device-to-cloud communication, including message routing and retry logic
• Develop APIs and services to query device state and execute commands at scale
• Design architectures that scale horizontally from hundreds to millions of devices
• Implement monitoring, alerting, and operational runbooks for distributed systems
• Build reliable async communication patterns using message queues and event streaming
• Own database and storage layer decisions for operational and analytical workloads
• Partner with hardware and device teams to translate needs into scalable backend services
• Write maintainable and tested infrastructure-as-code

Requirements

• 5+ years building backend infrastructure or distributed systems
• Strong experience in Go, Python, Java, or equivalent backend languages
• Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts like eventual consistency and failure handling
• Experience building high-scale, high-concurrency APIs and services
• Familiarity with message queues or event streaming (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS)
• Solid understanding of databases and data modeling (Relational vs NoSQL)
• Comfort with infrastructure-as-code and cloud platforms (AWS or GCP)
• Proven ability to own complex systems from design through operational support

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building device management or IoT backend systems
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and container orchestration
• Background in energy, utilities, or operational technology (OT)
• Experience with distributed tracing and observability (Datadog, Honeycomb)
• Knowledge of fleet management, device provisioning, or OTA update systems
• Exposure to consensus algorithms (Raft, Paxos) or distributed coordination (etcd, Zookeeper)
• Experience with stream processing frameworks (Kafka Streams, Flink)
• Experience with data center orchestration systems and baseboard management controllers
