About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and operational management for the largest Core within the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation
- Oversee animal care activities, facility maintenance, renovations, and space utilization
- Direct animal research activities and provide authoritative guidance to investigators on experimental design and procedures
- Manage budgetary control for preclinical services, including equipment, materials, and supplies
- Ensure facility compliance with CCAC regulations through regular inspections and detailed record-keeping
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to animal health, care, and facility operations
- Supervise, train, and evaluate technical personnel and specialized staff
- Oversee post-approval monitoring of research protocols and resolve issues of non-compliance
Requirements
- Post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation with at least 4 years of related experience, or an undergraduate degree with 6 years of related experience
- Extensive knowledge of CCAC regulations and animal research facility oversight
- Proven experience in operational planning, budgeting, and staff supervision
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- Master Laboratory Animal Technician or Registered Laboratory Animal Technician Certification (CALAS/ACSAL)
- Animal Health Technology Diploma or a degree in the Animal Science field
- Experience with GLP standards and quality assurance
- Strong project management skills and ability to manage complex, fast-paced environments
- Proficiency in animal facility resource software (e.g., Mosaic Vivarium)
