Histology Technologist

Responsibilities

• Prepare and process surgical, autopsy, and outreach tissue specimens using routine histologic techniques
• Perform daily and preventative maintenance on tissue processors, staining platforms, microtomes, and cryostats
• Execute specimen receiving, verification, processing, embedding, microtomy, staining (H&E, IHC), and coverslipping
• Manage "recut" logs and prepare routine, special stain, and IHC solutions
• Report test results within stated turnaround times and follow backup procedures during downtimes
• Maintain laboratory inventory and assist in the development of new protocols and updated antibodies
• Assist with research projects and participate in peer interviews and training of staff
• Ensure completion of quality control, maintenance, and quality assurance documentation
• Maintain pathology archives including blocks, slides, and frozen tissue samples

Requirements

• Must satisfy CLIA ‘88 qualification requirements for high complexity testing
• At least one year of histology experience
• Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program or a Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, life sciences, or a related field
• Ability to write laboratory procedures and policies
• Proficiency in using automated and conventional laboratory instrumentation
• Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and laboratory/hospital information systems
• Strong organizational ability and attention to detail
• Visual acuity and fine motor skills for microtomy and specimen handling

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification (or eligibility) for Histotechnician (HT) and/or Histotechnologist (HTL) through ASCP
