About the role
Responsibilities
- Implement curricula and activities to meet music-specific academic standards
- Teach music-based content including wind ensemble, general music, singing, and music theory
- Direct band classes with multiple types of instrumentation
- Develop music literacy lesson components related to rhythm, pitch, solfege, improvisation, and composition
- Collaborate with co-music teachers and operations to plan school performances
- Design and implement assessments to measure student progress
- Use assessment data to refine curriculum and instructional practices
- Support school instructional and cultural needs including academic coverage and test proctoring
- Maintain strong classroom management congruent with school systems
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in music education
- Advanced experience with instrumental pedagogy
- Proficiency in piano, recorder, and basic guitar
- Ability to manage and direct large groups of students
- Proficiency arranging instrumental and vocal music for varying ability levels
- Alignment with Uncommon’s core beliefs and educational philosophy
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in music education
- Valid State Certification
- Familiarity with Kodaly, Orff, or Dalcroze Eurhythmics principles
- Singing experience
- Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public or charter school setting
- Experience performing or teaching music
