About the role

Responsibilities

  • Implement curricula and activities to meet music-specific academic standards
  • Teach music-based content including wind ensemble, general music, singing, and music theory
  • Direct band classes with multiple types of instrumentation
  • Develop music literacy lesson components related to rhythm, pitch, solfege, improvisation, and composition
  • Collaborate with co-music teachers and operations to plan school performances
  • Design and implement assessments to measure student progress
  • Use assessment data to refine curriculum and instructional practices
  • Support school instructional and cultural needs including academic coverage and test proctoring
  • Maintain strong classroom management congruent with school systems
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in music education
  • Advanced experience with instrumental pedagogy
  • Proficiency in piano, recorder, and basic guitar
  • Ability to manage and direct large groups of students
  • Proficiency arranging instrumental and vocal music for varying ability levels
  • Alignment with Uncommon’s core beliefs and educational philosophy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in music education
  • Valid State Certification
  • Familiarity with Kodaly, Orff, or Dalcroze Eurhythmics principles
  • Singing experience
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public or charter school setting
  • Experience performing or teaching music
