Head of Midwifery

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery and transformation of high-quality, safe, and compassionate maternity services
• Accountable for clinical governance, risk management, and continuous quality improvement
• Drive strategic and annual service planning, ensuring financial sustainability and performance targets
• Lead workforce planning, including recruitment, retention, education, and staff wellbeing
• Collaborate with system partners and co-produce services with women and families
• Participate in the senior midwifery on-call rota

Requirements

• Registered Midwife
• Master’s degree or equivalent qualification/experience
• Management or leadership qualification (or evidence of working towards one)
• Post graduate qualification in a health-related subject
• Significant post-registration experience
• Proven experience in leading and managing staff and clinical services in complex environments
• Experience in quality improvement and clinical governance
• Experience in maternity contracting and commissioning processes
• Ability to manage budgets and lead cost improvement initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching qualification
• Published work in a clinical or healthcare area
• Mentoring or coaching qualification
• Experience in developing and implementing alternative models of care
