Head of Environment and Sustainability

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a comprehensive sustainability strategy focused on environmental protection and carbon reduction
• Create and implement robust environmental policies across pipeline, civils, and utilities operations
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and industry standards
• Conduct audits and prepare sustainability and environmental performance reports
• Collaborate with internal teams, supply chain partners, and regulatory bodies
• Monitor and report on key metrics including carbon emissions, energy use, and waste
• Lead the implementation of a carbon accounting system for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions
• Identify and mitigate environmental risks associated with utility activities
• Drive environmental awareness and training programmes across the organisation
• Research and implement innovative technologies to enhance sustainability performance

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in environment or sustainability roles within infrastructure or construction
• Proven experience in pipeline, civils, or utilities sectors (water and/or gas focus)
• Chartered or working towards membership of IEMA, CIWEM, or equivalent
• Expertise in EIA, carbon reduction, climate resilience, and biodiversity net gain
• Proven leadership experience managing teams and influencing senior stakeholders
• In-depth knowledge of UK environmental legislation and standards
• Experience implementing and managing ISO 14001
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification (MSc or equivalent)
• Experience working on major infrastructure programmes or frameworks
• ESG reporting and sustainability strategy development experience
