Government and Community Affairs Manager

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute OpenAI’s state and local government affairs and community engagement strategy across California.
• Build and maintain bipartisan relationships with state legislators, executive branch officials, local leaders, and community organizations.
• Monitor and analyze California legislative, regulatory, and political developments affecting the AI ecosystem.
• Represent OpenAI in public forums, coalitions, conferences, and community events.
• Support advocacy strategies regarding AI safety, innovation, education, and workforce development.
• Translate complex technical and policy issues into clear, accessible materials for diverse stakeholders.
• Develop community partnerships and educational programs to demonstrate the practical benefits of AI.
• Work cross-functionally with Legal, Product, Communications, and Partnerships teams to align external engagement with company priorities.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in public policy, government affairs, legislative/regulatory work, or community engagement.
• Deep understanding of California’s state and local political and regulatory environment.
• Proven track record of building trusted relationships with policymakers and community leaders.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex topics.
• Ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships and independent projects in a fast-moving environment.
• Willingness to travel regularly within California and occasionally to other states.
