Glassware and Media Prep Technician

Responsibilities

• Prepare microbiological and plant tissue culture media, buffers, agar plates, and specialized growth solutions
• Operate autoclaves and sterilization equipment, performing routine checks
• Ensure correct preparation, handling, labeling, storage, and distribution of media
• Maintain accurate records of media preparation, sterilization cycles, and stock levels
• Manage and monitor stock levels of reagents and consumables
• Maintain safe handling and disposal of materials in line with biosafety and COSHH regulations
• Conduct routine laboratory cleaning and waste disposal
• Collect, wash, sterilize, and restock laboratory glassware
• Clean and maintain media preparation equipment and storage facilities
• Provide technical support to scientific staff

Requirements

• 5x GCSEs or equivalent
• Experience in laboratory support or technical services within an academic or industrial lab
• Ability to follow SOPs accurately
• Practical experience preparing and handling laboratory media, buffers, and solutions
• Strong understanding of aseptic techniques and contamination control
• Knowledge of health & safety regulations including COSHH and autoclave safety
• Awareness of regulatory requirements for GM organisms

Preferred Qualifications

• Plant handling experience
• Ability to operate automated culture media plate pourers
• Strong organizational and time-management skills
• Basic IT skills for inventory and maintenance logs
