About the role

Responsibilities

  • Perform grounds maintenance including soil preparation, pruning, trimming, cultivation, weeding, and leaf/trash removal
  • Prepare campus athletic fields and designated grounds for events
  • Mow grass using various equipment such as tractor-mounted, rotary, or towed gang mowers
  • Operate trucks and automotive equipment for snow plowing, sweeping, and landscaping
  • Prepare and apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor
  • Requisition job parts and supplies and accurately record time and expenses
  • Complete all work safely and timely in accordance with university standards

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the trade
  • On-the-job field experience and formal horticulture coursework
  • Valid PA driver's license
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds from ground to overhead
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions for extended periods
  • Ability to work various shifts, overtime, and call-out work
  • Must be a member of, or agree to join, Local #95 International Union of Operating Engineers within 90 days of onboarding

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a large institutional setting (college, university, or hospital)
  • Tree climbing skills in accordance with I.S.A. standards
