Formation Process Engineer

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and parameter optimization of formation protocols for consumer lithium-ion cells
• Design and validate optimal formation recipes to maximize initial Coulombic efficiency and SEI film uniformity
• Establish capacity grading specifications including capacity, DCIR, and self-discharge rate
• Identify root causes of formation and grading anomalies and implement CAPA
• Apply SPC, DOE, and FMEA methodologies to improve process capability
• Partner with QA/QE to define inspection standards
• Optimize formation line takt time and equipment OEE
• Drive process transfers from lab bench to mass production
• Develop preventive maintenance plans for formation equipment
• Advance automation and MES data integration
• Lead FAT/SAT acceptance testing for formation equipment

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience in lithium-ion battery formation and capacity grading
• Deep understanding of SEI layer formation, gas evolution, and electrolyte decomposition
• Proficiency in DOE, SPC, FMEA, and Six Sigma methodologies
• Experience in process transfer from R&D to high-volume manufacturing
• Familiarity with formation cycler platforms like Neware, Landt, Arbin, or Basytec
• Proficiency in electrochemical testing (EIS, DCIR, self-discharge)
• Skilled in JMP, Minitab, Python, or Excel for data analysis
• Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Electrochemistry
