About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide high-level critical care to neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients during ground, rotor-wing, and fixed-wing medical transport.
- Perform thorough patient assessments and determine nursing diagnoses with consideration for altitude physiology and flight stressors.
- Manage complex clinical conditions including acute cardiovascular disease, respiratory failure, neurological injury, and multisystem trauma.
- Maintain a safe, functional, and hygienic transport environment, including the helicopter patient care compartment and medical equipment.
- Collaborate with UCAN Flight Physicians, Specialty Teams, and pilots to ensure seamless patient transitions and clinical priority communication.
- Participate in quality assurance, continuous quality improvement processes, and professional development committees.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Nursing (ADN) or higher; ADN holders must enroll in a BSN program within 6–9 months of hire.
- Current Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
- BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
- ACLS, PALS, NRP, and one of the following: TNS, TNCC, ENPC, PHTLS, or BTLS (required at hire or within 6 months).
- CFRN certification required within one year of hire.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Flight Nurse.
- Experience in ICU, ER, or PICU settings.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
