Firefighter Recruit

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled firefighting duties to combat, extinguish, and prevent fires
• Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls on assigned apparatus
• Conduct forced entry and rescue operations during fires and emergencies
• Maintain fire department apparatus, equipment, quarters, and hydrants
• Operate manual, gas-powered, and mechanical cutting tools
• Ventilate buildings and aircraft to remove heat, smoke, and hazardous gases
• Respond to multi-story fires and rescues using ground ladders and aerial apparatus
• Administer emergency first aid and assist with public education and inspections

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Mississippi driver's license
• U.S. citizenship and Mississippi county residency per civil service statute
• Successful completion of a civil service test, physical agility test, and in-person interviews
• Ability to perform moderate to strenuous physical activity and work extended hours during emergencies
• Ability to routinely lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds
• Sufficient visual acuity, hearing, and manual dexterity to operate equipment safely

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous firefighting experience
