About the role

Responsibilities

  • Support the Director of Finance in managing financial processes and resource allocations for the Faculty of Medicine's Academic portfolio.
  • Perform specialized financial analysis to support decision-making, financial planning, and budget negotiations with industry sponsors.
  • Manage core accounting functions, including month-end and year-end activities, accruals, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Develop and monitor financial control systems, budgets, and forecasts to ensure long-term sustainability of programs and units.
  • Prepare comprehensive quarterly and annual financial reports, highlighting revenue and expenditure variances.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, University regulations, and granting agency policies regarding the use of funds.
  • Develop and implement effective financial processes, systems, and procedures for research programs.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Completion of at least 7 of the 14 CPA academic prerequisites.
  • Minimum of two years of related financial experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Acceptable Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and various financial software applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with UBC financial and human resources systems (e.g., FMS, PeopleSoft, HRMS).
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting audit, budgeting principles, and grant administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex financial analysis and resolve account discrepancies.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
