Field Safety Engineer

Responsibilities

• Serve as Waymo’s primary engineering/technical liaison with automotive and traffic safety regulators in Japan (e.g., MLIT, NPA, and TMPD)
• Work with Policy, Legal, and other teams to establish proactive outreach and respond to regulatory requests
• Collaborate with the US-based Field Safety team to identify and analyze issues impacting the safety of the autonomous vehicle fleet
• Provide local Japan perspective to help identify and prioritize issues specific to Waymo’s operations in Japan

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical degree
• 10+ years of engineering or technical experience in automotive or transportation fields
• Experience with Japan’s automotive and/or transportation regulatory framework
• Native Japanese speaker with proficiency in English
• Strong communication and presentation skills in Japanese
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams in Japan and the United States

Preferred Qualifications

• M.S. or Ph.D. in engineering or a related technical field
• Experience interacting directly with automotive and traffic safety regulators
• Familiarity with autonomous vehicle technology
• Experience working in a fast-paced, rapidly-scaling company
