Field Operations Technician

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced technical support for sea-going operations and oceanographic instrumentation
• Deploy and recover oceanographic sampling systems including Niskin bottles, CTDs, and moorings
• Service, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair oceanographic and Earth science instrumentation
• Operate, launch, navigate, and maintain departmental research vessels and deck equipment
• Collect physical, chemical, and biological oceanographic data at sea
• Provide technical and logistical assistance for geology field schools and terrestrial research activities
• Manage inventory for field and laboratory equipment, chemicals, and consumables
• Instruct students and research personnel on the safe operation of sampling equipment

Requirements

• Technical program or university degree in a relevant discipline
• Minimum three years of related experience in field or instrumentation-based research
• Experience with oceanographic sampling systems and data collection techniques
• Experience with marine craft operation
• Ability to work in remote field settings and offshore for periods of up to two weeks

Preferred Qualifications

• University degree in Earth Sciences or a related discipline
• Demonstrated experience navigating small and medium-sized marine craft
• Proficiency in troubleshooting scientific instruments and electronic/mechanical systems
• Possession of or eligibility for SVOP, SDVBS, ROC-M, and Marine Basic First Aid certifications
• Experience with field data collection in geological or hydrogeological settings
• Experience with scientific instrument fabrication and testing
