About the role

Responsibilities

  • Conduct handling, routing, splicing, testing, and repair of thousands of fibers throughout the SPARC fusion machine
  • Perform mechanical integration of small assemblies such as passthrough flanges and enclosures
  • Install composite or polymer wrappings for fibers and their enclosures
  • Train other technicians in proper installation, splicing, routing, and measurement procedures
  • Improve safety protocols for laser and fiber optic handling
  • Fulfill manufacturing and R&D fiber needs through close cooperation with Engineering and Quality departments

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in fiber optics field applications
  • Experience with measurement equipment including OTDR, OSA, OBR, and power meters
  • Proven experience with fiber handling in a lab setting using known standards
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, odd locations, or on platforms up to 25 feet high
  • Dedication to safety in environments involving heat, cold, high voltage, and cryogenics

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in fiber optics field applications
  • Experience utilizing distributed sensing arrays
  • Experience with polyimide and various coated fibers
  • Experience designing, building, and testing fiber cable assemblies for cryogen and vacuum conditions
  • Expertise in fiber coating removal, re-coating, and specialty fiber splicing
  • Knowledge of optical sensing techniques and attenuation/insertion loss mechanisms
