About the role

Responsibilities

  • Execute and enhance a tailored security and safety operational plan addressing physical, digital, and psychological risks for newsroom staff.
  • Serve as the primary security partner to newsroom masthead and desk heads.
  • Lead incident response protocols and coordinate the rapid deployment of resources and expert assistance during critical situations.
  • Provide expert security planning, risk assessments, and logistical support for journalists deploying to high-risk or challenging environments.
  • Develop and implement training curriculums covering physical and digital safety, as well as programs supporting psychological well-being.
  • Manage high-performing domestic and international newsroom security teams.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity, legal, communications, and newsroom operations to integrate security into editorial planning.
  • Monitor global security trends and provide actionable intelligence briefings to newsroom leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • 10+ years of progressive safety and security experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience specifically supporting journalists or personnel in high-risk, sensitive, or international environments.
  • Proven expertise in global risk assessment, threat mitigation, and complex incident management.
  • Strong understanding of the unique security challenges faced by journalists, including physical threats, digital harassment, and psychological safety.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support newsgathering operations and team oversight.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or specialized professional certifications (e.g., hostile environment training, crisis management).
  • Direct experience working within a major news organization.
