About the Company
The New York City Board of Correction (BOC) is an independent, nine-member oversight body responsible for regulating, monitoring, and inspecting the City’s correctional facilities. Established in 1957, the Board is among the nation’s earliest independent correctional oversight entities, tasked with enforcing minimum standards, investigating incidents, and evaluating the performance of the Department of Correction.
Responsibilities
- Provide visionary and strategic leadership to advance the Board’s oversight, monitoring, investigative, and regulatory priorities
- Manage and oversee agency staff, establishing organizational priorities and promoting accountability
- Build and sustain productive partnerships with government agencies, elected officials, and community stakeholders
- Serve as the Board’s primary spokesperson at public hearings, media engagements, and stakeholder forums
- Advise Board members on emerging operational, legal, political, and policy matters
- Lead agency communications and public affairs strategies to strengthen transparency and public trust
- Manage sensitive and high-profile matters involving investigations, litigation, or significant media scrutiny
- Conduct regular visits to Rikers Island and other Department of Correction facilities to maintain operational awareness
Requirements
- License to practice law in the State of New York plus a baccalaureate degree and four years of full-time paid experience in the criminal justice system (one year in an executive/managerial capacity)
- OR a satisfactory equivalent including two years of full-time paid experience in the criminal justice system (one year in an executive/managerial capacity)
- Demonstrated executive-level leadership and management experience
- Ability to navigate complex governmental and public-facing environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Juris Doctor, MPA, Criminal Justice, or Public Policy)
- Experience working with a Board of Directors or Commission
- Expertise in correctional systems, criminal justice reform, or law enforcement accountability
- Strong operational and managerial capabilities including budget and compliance oversight
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive leadership
