About the role
Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair intricate electrical systems in diesel-electric locomotives
- Conduct scheduled electrical inspections and circuit tests using schematics and location circuit plans
- Perform maintenance and repair of electrical components in locomotive cabs or electrical compartments
- Troubleshoot malfunctions in locomotive control circuits and components to determine root causes
- Utilize shop machinery, equipment, and tools effectively and safely
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, operational protocols, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines
- Communicate technical information and job procedure recommendations verbally and in writing
Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver's license
- Background in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors, or possession of a current journeyman's electrical card
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and prints
- Proficiency in keyboarding and competence in basic mathematics
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to successfully complete an English language assessment
- Ability to pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized formal electrical training program (community college, trade school, or military)
- Possession of relevant electrician certifications or licenses
- An Associate's degree in electricity or electronics
- Experience working with high-voltage circuitry or large motor generators
- Experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions or in confined spaces
- Previous experience in environments requiring personal protective equipment (PPE)
