About the role

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and assess child care programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Provide consultation, guidance, and technical assistance to child care providers regarding educational programming and classroom management
  • Serve as a resource for current trends and research in Early Childhood Education
  • Issue notices of violation and make recommendations regarding child care permits, licenses, or program closures
  • Examine records and files of child care programs, staff, and children to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Investigate complaints regarding licensed child care services and allegations of unlicensed operations
  • Represent the Department at professional conferences and development activities

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education with 12 graduate credits in early childhood or elementary education, plus 3 years of relevant experience
  • OR a Baccalaureate degree in education with student teaching experience, plus a Master's in education, social work, psychology, or counseling, and 3 years of relevant experience
  • Five years of satisfactory teaching experience as a licensed teacher of early childhood education may substitute for the 3-year experience requirement
  • Ability to travel throughout the five boroughs using mass transit or a personal vehicle
  • Ability to carry and use mobile inspection equipment weighing approximately 15 pounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Certification in Early Childhood Education
  • Strong communication, analytic, and observational skills
  • Ability to assess risk and deduce potential impacts of conditions
  • Strong writing skills for detailed observation reporting
  • Proficiency with mobile computing devices
