About the role

Responsibilities

  • Answer 911 emergency calls, non-emergency calls, and public inquiries.
  • Gather pertinent details and prioritize incidents to ensure responder safety and timely response.
  • Provide pre-arrival instructions and emergency medical guidance to callers.
  • Perform Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) using standardized questions and response coding.
  • Manage the deployment of Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical personnel and vehicles.
  • Monitor multiple radio channels and track the location and status of field units.
  • Utilize Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) and other databases to maintain accurate official documentation.
  • Use CJIS/LEAPS/NCIC and RMV systems to access criminal records, warrants, and motor vehicle data.
  • Broadcast weather bulletins, civil defense announcements, and criminal activity alerts.

Requirements

  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with mandatory overtime.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including CORI/SORI checks.
  • Ability to remain composed and communicate clearly in high-stress, fast-paced environments.
  • Proficiency in keyboarding and data entry with high speed and accuracy.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certifications in CPR, NG911, LEAPS/NCIC, EMD, and APCO Basic Telecommunicator.
  • Must complete FEMA ICS-100 and FEMA NIMS IS-700 training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in criminal justice, communications, public safety, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of experience in emergency dispatching or public safety communications.
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts public safety protocols and local geographic areas.
