Director of Software Engineering

Responsibilities

• Accountable for the execution and evolution of software systems across autonomy, platform systems, edge computing, and mission-critical infrastructure
• Direct the culture, processes, and best practices of a rapidly growing engineering team as it scales from ~5 to ~50 members
• Stay hands-on in the codebase, contributing directly to architecture, implementation, and critical technical decisions
• Drive the development of scalable, resilient, and secure software designed for harsh and operationally constrained environments
• Partner with the Director of Hardware to align software development with hardware requirements and deployment timelines
• Establish engineering practices across system design, testing, CI/CD, and observability
• Interview, develop, and retain exceptional engineering talent while fostering a culture of ownership and high standards

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience building and leading high-performing software engineering teams
• Proven track record of shipping complex software systems in defense, aerospace, robotics, or autonomy
• Strong software architecture and systems-thinking capabilities across backend, edge, or real-time systems
• Hands-on programming experience and comfort operating close to the hardware
• Experience taking products from concept through deployment in fast-moving environments
• Eligible for (or able to obtain) Canadian security clearance
• Based in or willing to relocate to Ottawa for a full-time, on-site role

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with distributed systems, robotics platforms, simulation environments, or mission-critical systems
• Experience building scalable engineering organizations
