Director of Bands

Responsibilities

• Direct Upper School ensembles (Jazz Band/Concert Band) and Middle School bands
• Teach music electives such as AP Music Theory or Middle School Music Production
• Develop students' technical proficiency, musical literacy, and ensemble performance skills
• Plan and conduct concerts, festivals, tours, and the annual King El Sistema Residency
• Sustain a vertically aligned band program and coordinate with the Lower School Band Unit
• Recruit and retain students through community engagement and outreach
• Manage program inventory, budgeting, instrument maintenance, and music library resources
• Collaborate with Music, Theater, and DEIB faculty to ensure inclusive and interdisciplinary learning

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience directing band ensembles at both the secondary and middle school levels
• Strong conducting, rehearsal, and instrumental pedagogy skills
• Ability to teach improvisation and possess a strong music theory background in both jazz and classical styles
• Proficiency with educational technology, including Google Classroom and music notation software
• Proven ability to build and sustain a comprehensive instrumental music program
• Commitment to fostering student creativity and supporting social-emotional development
• Demonstrated cross-cultural competence and ability to work in a diverse community

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Music Education or a related field
• Skills in arranging or composing music to fit flexible instrumentation
• Experience integrating music technology into instruction and performance
