Director, Battery Energy Storage

Responsibilities

• Direct the overall management of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects, overseeing engineering, technology, and team efforts from conceptualization through construction and operation.
• Lead development engineering, including conceptual designs, layouts, and technical feasibility studies for pipeline and greenfield projects.
• Manage BESS vendor relationships and stay updated on emerging battery technologies and industry trends.
• Lead the technical specification process for procurement (RFI/RFP/RFQ) and oversee the selection of OEMs and EPCs.
• Establish and maintain engineering design criteria, applicable standards, and specifications for all BESS projects.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support grid connection, regulatory compliance, and project commercialization.
• Provide technical oversight and support to construction and O&M teams to optimize installation, commissioning, and system performance.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in the renewable energy industry.
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred).
• Proven experience with grid-connected BESS or inverter-based generation.
• Demonstrated experience in the design and delivery of grid-scale bulk energy storage technology solutions.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or other CAD software for producing conceptual layouts.
• Strong knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC), NFPA, and UL standards.
• Strong technical, analytical, and project management skills with high attention to detail.
• Ability and willingness to travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
• Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Engineering.
• Experience with power systems analysis software such as PSS/E, ETAP, or PSCAD.
• Strong understanding of control systems, SCADA, HMI, EMS, and networking protocols.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems including HVAC and fire protection systems relevant to energy storage.
• Experience with wind or solar system installation and design.
