About the role
Responsibilities
- Shepherd SPARC diagnostic sub-systems through final design, collaborating with scientists, designers, and engineers
- Integrate technical input to ensure diagnostic designs meet mission goals for plasma control and data delivery
- Develop assembly, installation, calibration, and commissioning plans to ensure on-schedule first plasma
- Integrate diagnostics into plant-level and real-time plasma control systems
- Participate in the testing and operation of diagnostic systems to balance operational learning with physics results
- Contribute to a strong safety culture and collaborate with academic partners and CFS designers
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field (mechanical, aerospace, civil, or nuclear)
- Experience designing new or upgraded scientific instruments of significant scale and complexity
- Demonstrated experience using scientific instruments to support operational or research missions
- Software development skills in Python, Matlab, C++, or equivalent for data analysis and equipment automation
- Hands-on knowledge of diagnostic systems (e.g., vacuum systems, lasers, calibration sources)
- Ability to understand engineering and physics tradeoffs
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical activities like climbing or standing for extended periods
- Willingness to travel or work required nights, weekends, or on-call occasionally
- Ability to work in a facility with industrial hazards including high voltage, strong magnets, and cryogenics
Preferred Qualifications
- Participation in the design and implementation of a plasma diagnostic for a magnetically confined fusion experiment at University-scale or above
