About the role
Responsibilities
- Partner with editors to conceptualize and execute a cohesive creative vision across print and digital platforms.
- Lead art direction and develop weekly concepts for the Daily Opinion report and Sunday Opinion, including high-impact cover stories and features.
- Translate complex journalism into immersive, scalable, and visually driven digital experiences.
- Drive concept development from ideation through execution, inspiring and nurturing designers.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including editorial, photo, design, data, audience, video, and audio.
- Ensure visual consistency and creative excellence across all platforms.
- Provide hands-on execution in design, graphics, and typography.
- Cultivate relationships with artists and illustrators from initial sketches through final execution.
Requirements
- 7+ years of design experience across print and digital.
- 3+ years of experience leading designers and art directors.
- Deep expertise in design fundamentals across digital, mobile, print, and video.
- Advanced proficiency in Figma, InDesign, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Proven ability to shape editorial content and collaborate with a global network of visual creators.
- Strong typographic, illustrative, and conceptual design skills.
- Excellent communication skills for translating visual ideas through sketches and wireframes.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of digital design experience with an understanding of product limitations.
- Familiarity with UX/UI guidance for complex storytelling and front-end design wireframes.
- Experience working in a news or media environment.
- Highly-developed judgment regarding trends in illustration and photography.
- Experience maintaining brand identities across emerging platforms.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, news-driven environment with tight deadlines.
