Deputy Public Defender II

Responsibilities

• Manage a full caseload of felonies (Class A, B, and C) and represent defendants in Superior Court.
• Handle various court hearings, including arraignments, first appearances, and non-compliance calendars.
• Conduct legal research into precedents, federal laws, state statutes, and county ordinances to protect client interests.
• Review police reports, interview witnesses, and collaborate with prosecutors and the court to resolve cases.
• Negotiate and mediate with opposing counsel, judges, law enforcement, and other government agencies.
• Provide legal assistance and trial strategy support to other defense attorney staff.
• Maintain accurate statistical information and perform essential time management and scheduling functions.

Requirements

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in the State Bar of Washington.
• Proven ability to conduct complex legal research and prepare sound legal opinions.
• Strong courtroom presentation and oral advocacy skills.
• Ability to analyze and apply legal principles across civil, criminal, constitutional, and administrative law.
