Deputy City Solicitor

Responsibilities

• Advise and represent the City of Philadelphia and its employees in state and federal court
• Present evidence to defend clients or impeach plaintiffs in tort litigation
• Conduct legal research and analysis of complex legal problems
• Prepare and file legal documents including preliminary objections, answers, and dispositive motions
• Negotiate settlements and manage high-volume litigation
• Supervise legal assistants and train professional staff

Requirements

• Minimum of five years of relevant legal experience
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA accredited law school
• Member in good standing of the Pennsylvania Bar or eligible for admission by reciprocity
• Strong oral advocacy and legal writing skills
• Ability to work onsite five days per week in Philadelphia
• Must become a Philadelphia resident within six months of hire

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in civil rights litigation
• Knowledge of 42 U.S.C. sec. 1983 and municipal liability under Monell
• Familiarity with the Pennsylvania Tort Claims Act
