Database Administrator

Responsibilities

• Own and improve the reliability, performance, security, and scalability of production database systems
• Lead database monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, backup, recovery, replication, and disaster recovery practices
• Identify, diagnose, and resolve complex database performance and availability issues
• Partner with engineering teams on schema design, indexing strategies, and query optimization
• Improve infrastructure-as-code, automation, observability, and repeatability across database operations
• Participate in and lead database-related incident response and remediation planning
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and operational teams

Requirements

• Significant professional experience administering MySQL or similar relational databases in production
• Deep experience operating cloud-hosted database platforms (AWS RDS, Aurora, or Azure)
• Expertise in database performance tuning, query optimization, and high availability
• Experience with infrastructure as code, automation, and observability
• Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, networking, and security
• Eligibility and willingness to complete UK police vetting requirements (NPPV3/SC clearance)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting AWS RDS, Aurora, or Azure at scale
• Experience with microservices-based architectures and distributed systems
• Experience supporting SaaS platforms or regulated public sector environments
• Experience defining SLOs, SLAs, and production readiness standards
