About the role

Responsibilities

  • Apply machine learning and statistical modeling to materials R&D to drive product and process decisions
  • Partner with materials scientists, formulators, and process engineers on experimental design, analysis, and interpretation
  • Build models using response-surface, Bayesian optimization, and variable selection for abrasive formulations and coatings
  • Coach and instruct the R&D team on statistical thinking, Design of Experiments (DoE), and practical machine learning
  • Contribute to the development of vision-systems and LLM-enabled R&D tools
  • Strengthen measurement-system practices across the lab to improve experimental quality and decision confidence
  • Collaborate across 3M’s material and data science communities to implement new methods, tools, and AI capabilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a quantitative or engineering discipline (e.g., statistics, math, computer science, physics, or engineering)
  • Five years of applied data science experience in R&D, materials, process, or manufacturing environments
  • Python fluency with relevant modeling and statistical libraries
  • Strong foundation in classical statistics and Design of Experiments (DoE) expertise

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in a quantitative or engineering discipline
  • Background in materials science, chemical engineering, or related physical sciences
  • Experience with surrogate modeling, multi-fidelity methods, Bayesian optimization, or active learning
  • Exposure to industrial automation, lab data systems, vision systems, or instrumented test environments
  • Familiarity with LLM tooling in R&D contexts
