About the role

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional counseling, support groups, and advocacy services to victims of violent crime and sexual assault.
  • Deliver 24-hour crisis intervention, including telephone counseling and on-site support during medical exams or criminal investigations.
  • Respond promptly to pager calls from medical examiners, law enforcement, and medical personnel within a 30-minute timeframe.
  • Assist victims with compensation claims, public aid, psychotherapy referrals, and the preparation of victim impact statements.
  • Serve as a liaison between victims and law enforcement, attorneys, child protection workers, and community organizations.
  • Conduct public education presentations and community engagement to raise awareness of victim services and resources.
  • Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with state laws and victim rights regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, Psychology, Human Services, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Two years of related counseling experience.
  • Valid State of Iowa driver's license.
  • Ability to work a flexible on-call schedule, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must meet the requirements stated in Iowa Code Chapter 915.20A for a victim counselor.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check, drug screen, and national fingerprint/abuse record checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in crisis intervention or working within the criminal justice system.
  • Strong group facilitation and public speaking skills.
