About the role
Responsibilities
- Provide legal services for the Shipping Company and Marine Supply & Trading as a maritime law subject matter expert.
- Negotiate maritime contracts including ship sales, purchases, vessel financing, chartering, and shipbuilding.
- Advise traders on marine-related elements of sale contracts, transportation agreements, and terminal agreements.
- Manage maritime claims involving demurrage, cargo damage, collision, and personal injury.
- Provide guidance on compliance issues including international trade laws, antitrust, FCPA, and the UK Bribery Act.
- Advise on international and domestic regulatory matters regarding environmental, safety, labor, and cabotage issues.
- Support global projects by collaborating with Upstream and Downstream counsel.
- Maintain availability for emergent issues and emergency response/crisis management.
Requirements
- JD or equivalent advanced law degree from an accredited law school.
- Admitted to practice law in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or England & Wales.
- Minimum of 5 years of directly relevant maritime law experience.
- Thorough understanding of legal and commercial issues related to international and domestic oil and gas maritime operations.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Qualification in England & Wales with experience in the London market.
- Experience drafting and negotiating various charter parties (e.g., Shelltime, ASBATANKVOY, BIMCO).
- Experience in Supply and Trading, specifically the sale and purchase of oil and gas in international trade.
- Experience with LNG charters and maritime aspects of crude oil and product sale agreements.
- Background in international and domestic shipping litigation and arbitration.
- In-house experience with an international shipowner or oil and gas company.
