About the role

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks for clients, staff, and guests according to menu plans and Canada Food Guide standards
  • Manage food preparation, portion control, and recipe adherence for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Oversee food receiving, sorting, and safe storage of supplies and donations to minimize waste
  • Maintain high standards of kitchen sanitation, including cleaning equipment, cooking surfaces, and dining areas
  • Supervise and train volunteers on food preparation, sanitation protocols, and safe equipment use
  • Monitor kitchen equipment and report maintenance needs to ensure operational safety
  • Ensure proper rotation of food products and correct labeling of leftovers

Requirements

  • Post-secondary certificate in cooking or completion of a formal culinary program
  • Safe Food Handler’s Certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of related cooking experience, including at least 1 year of institutional cooking
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Ability to lift 20+ pounds and work in a standing position for long periods
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including those experiencing homelessness

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cook’s papers or completion of a one-year culinary course
  • Experience cooking for large groups (200+ people)
  • Completion of Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Training
