Controller

Responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting and financial reporting functions for a fraternal benefit organization
• Manage daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial, payroll, and administrative tasks
• Monitor bank activity, analyze cash positions, and reconcile disbursements
• Process bi-weekly payroll and prepare related reports
• Handle annuity tax payments and maintain records for claims, transfers, and employee benefits
• Reconcile claims, bank accounts, pension payments, and investment activity
• Prepare journal entries, trial balances, and financial reports
• Ensure compliance with Illinois Department of Insurance regulations and audit readiness

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience
• At least 3 years in a leadership role
• Strong knowledge of statutory accounting principles (SAP) and GAAP
• Proven ability to manage audits, financial statements, and internal controls
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and investment accounting

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA certification
• Experience with insurance, fraternal benefit societies, or regulated financial entities
• Experience with membership-based or nonprofit organizations
• Understanding of reserve accounting and actuarial coordination
• Proficiency in Sage or SOVOS
